FTL 01_Psalm90_3Sept08

[re: verse Ps 90.17]
If the structure of this Ps. (according to Waltkie) is in 3parts:

one: [vv1 thru 10, Contemplation]

A Prayer of Moses the man of God.
90:1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
3Thou turns man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. 4For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. 5Thou carrys them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which grows up. 6In the morning it flourishes, and grows up; in the evening it is cut down, and withers.
7For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. 8Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. 9For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. 10The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

two: [vv.11 & 12, Petition]
10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 11 Who knows the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

three: [vv.13 thru 17, Prayerful petition]
13 Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants. 14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. 16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.
17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

a. Please give me some definitive points on ver.17, with respect to its context and the overall structure. Battleaxe out!

b. If this Ps is ruled by the maxim of 'cause & effect'; and, v.17 is the effect of a cause (or causes) within the lines of the Psalm where might we look to own the intentions of this Psalm? BA out!

Hey BA,

Welcome to the blogosphere!

It seems to me Psalm 90:1-2 is key: "LORD, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were born, or Thou didst give brith to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God."

I don't think it is accidental that after Psalm 90:17 the very next Psalm begins by saying: "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, 'My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!'" (Ps. 91:1-2).

And so I think we see some parallels between Ps. 90:1-2 and Ps. 91:1-2.

It seems Ps. 90:17 is simply an example of the trust in God spoken of in Ps. 90:1-2 and Ps. 91:1-2.
